Happy World Down Syndrome Day
By: Abby Plummer, TNS Advocate
While people with Down Syndrome are different, we’re not that different from everyone else. I still go to the gym and dance classes and can learn new things whenever I want. I can do whatever I put my mind to, but sometimes I need extra help.
I might be a little different because of my Down Syndrome, but I am proud of myself for who I am. Having Down Syndrome is something to be grateful for because I am happy, I enjoy my life so much, and I get to do everything that I want to do. Down Syndrome allows me to express my talents in many different ways.
Down Syndrome means a lot to me, not just because I have it. It means I can express my feelings and follow my heart. I can do whatever I put my mind to despite my disability. I also look up to people who support me in and out of the community. The best thing about having Down Syndrome is that I can go to Camp PALS and make lots of new friends.
Supporting someone who has Down Syndrome is easy. The best thing to do is help me set realistic goals and help me reach them. I also love it when people support and care about me. Some people might need to discuss expectations and action steps to accomplish their goals, and having a plan can help, too. Expressing my emotions to others and encouraging healthy habits is also helpful.
Despite my disability, we’re not all that different from each other, and it’s important to remember that.
Happy World Down Syndrome Day!
