Down Syndrome Does Not Stop Me
By: Julia Shirey
Down Syndrome doesn’t stop me from doing what I love. I love working with my coworkers, becoming independent, and taking on new responsibilities. I keep on having new dreams and shining bright. I also love my family and friends, as they support and care about me, even if I have Down Syndrome. My biggest advice is to dream big and follow the path of your dreams. Just because I have Down Syndrome doesn’t mean I can’t do things in my community! I have friends and work multiple jobs (Ember’s, Villa, TNS, Bake Ability, and more). I love making friendship bracelets and selling them. I even take drum lessons and listen to live music.
You may be asking, what is Down Syndrome? It is a genetic chromosome disability. It is because of the extra chromosome in the body that causes delays. Everyone who has Down Syndrome is unique; they have their own interests and hobbies. Ways to help those who have a learning disability because of Down Syndrome are helping us get involved, avoiding making assumptions about us, and being honest and direct. It also helps to lead by example and be positive.
Having a good support network is important. My neighbors and my friends care for me, and I care for them. My family supports me and helps me stay focused and organized. I love being with my coworkers, as they help me improve my teamwork skills, and it makes me feel good inside.
Down Syndrome doesn’t stop me from being myself, I love that I am unique. We can all work to treat people in our community with kindness and love!
